How to Get a Residence Permit in Egypt

Every foreigner, including refugees and asylum-seekers, staying in the Arab Republic of Egypt is obliged to have a valid residence permit. Without a valid permit, s/he would be violating the residency law in the country, which is punishable under Egyptian law. Therefore, you are advised not only to obtain your residence permit after registration with UNHCR but also to renew it when it expires. In this post, we’ll tell you how to get a residence permit in Egypt

The residence permit is issued only at the passports and immigration Administration in Abbasiya. Staying in Egypt without a valid residency permit is punishable under Egyptian law.

In order to obtain or renew the residence permit, there are some instructions to follow.

Required Documents

(1) All UNHCR registration cards of the family members or dependents, registered with you in Egypt.

(2) Original passports of your family members.

(3) Copies of your UNHCR registration documents and passports.

(4) The reference number which you obtained from the UNHCR office or Caritas.

(5) Two passport-sized photos of yourself.

It is required of you to pay EGP 100 as processing fees for the residency permit card at the bank located at the premises of the registration.

How To Get a Residence Permit In Egypt

  1. Approach the local embassy and submit your passport.
  2. Submit the necessary documents including at least six (6) months of validity remaining before expiration and at least one completely blank visa page for the visa stamp.
    • Note: The following passport pages 22, 23, and 24 are not visa pages and are not acceptable in Egypt for purpose of a Visa.
  3. Fill out the resident permit application form.
  4. Attach a supporting Letter from your home country addressed to the “Consulate of Egypt” explaining the purpose of the trip, guaranteeing financial support for you while in Egypt.
  5. The letter should explain what business the applicant plan to be undertaking in Egypt. This is very important because it will show that you are financially stable to begin a viable business in Egypt. After completing the fill-out visa form, sign and submit all the attached documents.
