Robert Anthony De Niro Jr. was born in the Manhattan borough of New York City on August 17, 1943. His father,  Robert De Niro Sr, and his mother,  Virginia Admiral, were both painters. His mother had Dutch, English, French, and German heritage, whilst his father was of Irish and Italian descent. De Niro was the only child of his parents while they were still together.

De Niro attended PS 41, a public elementary school in Manhattan, through the sixth grade. He then attended the upper school of the Little Red School House, Elisabeth Irwin High School, for the seventh and eighth grades. After being admitted to the ninth grade at the High School of Music and Art, he eventually switched to IS 71, Charles Evans Hughes Junior High School. At age 16, he left high school to pursue acting.
