Shah Rukh Khan was born Shahrukh Khan on 2 November 1965 into a Muslim family in New Delhi. Khan’s father, Mir Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian independence activist from Peshawar. His mother, Lateef Fatima, was the daughter of a senior government engineer.

Khan spent the first five years of his life in Mangalore with his maternal grandfather. He grew up in the Rajendra Nagar neighbourhood of New Delhi where his father had several business ventures including a restaurant, and the family lived a middle-class life in rented apartments. Khan attended St. Columba’s School in central Delhi where he received the school’s highest award, the Sword of Honour because of his brilliance. After high school, Khan enrolled at Hansraj College (1985–88) to study economics but spent much of his time at Delhi’s Theatre Action Group (TAG). After Hansraj, he began studying for a master’s degree in mass communication at Jamia Millia Islamia but left to pursue his acting career.

Khan’s first leading part was in the 1988-starting Dil Dariya television series by Lekh Tandon. Additionally, he has roles in the television series Umeed (1989), Wagle Ki Duniya (1988–90), Circus (1989–90), and Idiot (1992). In 1991, Khan decided against acting in movies, seeing it as a means to cope with the loss of his mother.

To pursue a full-time career in Bollywood, he relocated from Delhi to Mumbai, where he was soon signed to four films. His acting career in Bollywood began with the box office success of 1992’s Deewana, which served as his cinematic debut.

Shah portrayed a killer in Baazigar and a devoted lover in Darr in 1993. Khan also did a naked scene with Deepa Sahi in Maya Memsaab in 1993. He co-starred with Deepak Tijori and Suchitra Krishnamurthy in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa in 1994 as a musician who was in love.

He transformed Dreamz Unlimited into Red Chillies Entertainment, adding his wife Gauri as a producer in 2004. He then played an Indian Air Force pilot who falls in love with a Pakistani woman in Veer-Zaara.
